5 Easy Ways to Prepare Fresh Spinach

The spinach can is popped open. Popeye throws back his head, gulps down the spinach, beats off the villains and saves his fresh spinachbeloved Olive Oyl.

I remember this scene from childhood cartoons, even if I didn’t appreciate the spinach at the time. Now I adore it and fresh spinach is a staple in my kitchen. Not only is it delicious, but adding spinach to your meal means you’re adding iron; vitamins K, A, C and B2; folic acid and other healthy nutrients. If you want to increase the healthfulness of a recipe, think about adding spinach when you’re grocery shopping in Minneapolis.

Here are ways to quickly cook spinach so you can add it to your fall soups, pasta, casseroles or make it as its own side dish.

First, wash and drain the spinach, remove the stems and tear large leaves if desired. Next, choose your cooking method.

One pound of fresh spinach should be steamed for 3 to 5 minutes or until tender.

Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet, add a few cloves of sliced garlic and heat for one minute. Add the spinach and use tongs to lift and flip the spinach until it’s coated with oil. Cover and let cook for one minute, then uncover, stir and flip again. Cover again if needed and cook until wilted.

Place 10 ounces of spinach and 1 tablespoon of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave until it starts to wilt, between 30 seconds and 2 minutes. Stir and microwave a little longer if needed until all of the spinach is wilted.

Cook one pound of fresh spinach in a small amount of boiling salted water for 3 to 5 minutes.

Cut up spinach and boil per directions above. Next, heat 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat until melted. Add ¼ cup of onion and 1 clove of minced garlic and cook for about 5 minutes. Stir in ½ cup cream, 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg and a dash of salt and pepper. Stir and cook until boiling. Add the spinach and cook, stirring for 2 minutes.

You may not need Popeye’s villain-fighting skills, but most of us want to improve our health. Buying spinach when you’re grocery shopping in Minneapolis means you’ll be adding extra vitamins and nutrients to your menu, and that’s a sure win!
