Inside CobornsDelivers: How We Choose our Drivers

August 19, 2014

Going Above and Beyond the Job Description

Driver Adam goes above and beyond his job description at this neighborhood’s National Night Out get-together

CobornsDelivers’ drivers do a lot more than drive. “My drivers are always kind and courteous,”customer Betsy Lindgren said. “They always have a positive attitude, even in tough weather conditions. They warn me when I’m handling a bag that’s heavy or has fragile items like eggs.”

When hiring its Twin Cities grocery delivery drivers, who are officially called Neighborhood Service Representatives (NSR)s, CobornsDelivers carefully screens candidates. In addition to requiring clean driving records, Delivery Services Team Lead Dan Bauman says he seeks applicants who know how to deliver top quality service.

“What makes our drivers unique is their ability to provide excellent customer service,” Bauman said. “They are in our customer’s homes many times each day, interacting with everyone including children and pets. Our NSRs get to know their customers personally.”

Bauman sees the results of this top-notch customer service. He receives five to eight spontaneous compliments every week. From helping customers who are feeling unwell to chasing pets that sneak outside, NSRs go above and beyond in their daily work.

“Our NSRs need the ability to work on their own, problem solve independently and be able to do a physical job despite extreme temperatures and weather,” Bauman said.

Their days are busy, too. Drivers make 25 to 35 Twin Cities grocery delivery stops each day. During the week, there’s one shift from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and a second shift from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Weekends see one shift, 8 a.m to 5 p.m.

“Our NSRs enjoy the work they do and understand they are having a direct impact on our customer’s lives,” Bauman said. “Our teams hope to continue this high quality service in the future.”

“I like that my girls see female drivers,” says Lindgren. “But most of all I appreciate that my drivers save me a trip with three kids to the grocery store. That’s one thing off my to-do list and frees up my time and energy to do something more enjoyable.”
